Canadian Government and Citizenship Grade 5 Social Studies Ontario CurriculumThe Charter of Rights and Freedoms: Students will learn about the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a crucial aspect of our society. They will discover how it is practically applied to various case studies that have been argued in front of the Supreme Court.
  3. Understanding How Decisions are Made: Students will engage in a decision-making simulation, a practical application of their learning. They will learn to consider various stakeholder perspectives, crucial in personal and governmental decision-making processes.
  4. Political Parties of Canada: Students will learn more about the major political parties in Canada and how they align along the political spectrum. They will gain an unbiased view of all political parties and learn their core values and how these impact issues such as the economy, social services, rights and freedoms, and the environment.
  5. Politics in Canada – Students will explore how Canadian government works. they will begin to understand in a simple way how a government is formed at the federal and provincial levels. They will be introduced to the major political parties of Canada.
  6. Responsibilities of Government Focusing on four levels of government (Federal, Provincial, Indigenous Governance, Municipal, and School Boards) students will begin to understand the responsibilities of each level of government and how they work together to make Canada work.
  7. Structure of Government Students will explore the key structure of government at the Federal and Provincial levels of government. They will learn who holds key roles in government at these levels and the structure and hierarchy that allows them to work.
  8. Government and the People – Students will explore real life case studies from across Canada and explore important divisive issues from various stakeholder perspectives. Students will explore why an important role of government involves considering the perspectives of many stakeholder groups before making decisions that impact Canadians.
  9. How Elections Work: Learn how a prime minister gets elected by dramatizing a skit all about calling an election.
  10. How the Senate Works: Learn the important advisory role that the senate plays in making laws and representing stakeholders by creating a student senate in your classroom to discuss an upcoming event or rule change in your classroom.
  11. Indigenous GovernmentLearn about how Indigenous communities govern themselves and their journey to working with the federal government towards self-government. Learn how the Indian Act shaped the way Indigenous communities were governed and the lasting impact this has had on
    communities.
  12. Scaffolded Inquiry Project: Students will work through a guided inquiry to self select topics that interest them and explore how government works to support stakeholders
