Through this grade 3 forces unit, students will

  1. Students will recognize their background knowledge about the topic. They will formulate specific questions to answer during the study of forces and movement.
  2. Students will identify a push and pull using direct (contact) force or indirect (noncontact) force.
  3. Students will describe how the force of gravity can cause an object to start, stop, and how mass affects gravity. Students will be introduced to the scientific method.
  4. Students will investigate how to slow an object from hitting the ground (decrease force). Students will be introduced to the engineering design process.
  5. Students will describe how magnets can be used to attract, repel, and change the direction of an object.
  6. Students will explore and demonstrate an understanding of friction.
  7. Students will explore and demonstrate an understanding of electrostatic force.
  8. Students will consolidate their knowledge of how to start, stop, and change the direction of an object using different types of forces.
  9. Students will investigate and asses the way in which forces in nature impact our environment and how we can protect ourselves from these forces.
  10. Students will explore and assess the use of safety devices to minimize the effects of forces.
  11. Students will apply their knowledge of forces to design a device.
  12. Students will use design problem-solving skills and knowledge acquired from previous investigations to design and build

FAQ: More About This Grade 3 Forces Unit

♦ I’ve never made an inquiry. Will this be right for me?

Inquiry is more than a project. It is a way to leverage student voice and choice to engage and inspire deep learning.  This unit and the other supports provided to you by Madly Learning will help you implement more inquiry-based teaching in your classroom.  The lessons are clearly laid out and will help you transition from a traditional learning model to a more inquiry approach.

♦ Does this product align to my curriculum standards?

This unit is aligned with the Ontario curriculum and meets all of the expectations of the

{ONTARIO} – Grade 3: Strong and Stable Structures

♦ How do I use this grade 3 forces product with my special education and English Language learners?

This is a hands-on unit and is easily differentiated to meet the needs of complex learners.  Narrowing the focus to simply understanding the big ideas reduces the complexity of the activities in this unit while also allowing students to participate in modified activities at grade level for science.  Many reading and research materials are available online and can be supported by using digital reading software.  Because this unit is student-centered and inquiry-focused, it is easier to differentiate the content and product produced by the students by increasing or decreasing the complexity of level and depth of understanding.

Is this in French – No?  Madly Learning does not produce products in French.  (We have in the past, and it did not work) We are unable to ensure and maintain quality products in a language we do not speak.  We do not intend to translate this or other products into French.
