- Students will identify properties of materials and how these relate to the purpose of a structure.
- Students will explore the strength of materials and shapes.
- Students will recognize the use of struts and ties in order to combat compression and tension.
- Students will recognize strength as the ability to hold a load. They will investigate how construction techniques can be used to strengthen structures. Students will investigate how to alter the strength of materials and structures.

Narrowing the focus to simply understanding the big ideas reduces the complexity of the activities in this unit while also allowing students to participate in modified activities at grade level for science. Many reading and research materials are available online and can be supported by using digital reading software. Because this unit is student-centered and inquiry-focused, it is easier to differentiate the content and product produced by the students by increasing or decreasing the complexity of level and depth of understanding.
