In this comprehensive inquiry unit students will explore the world of energy & electricity. They will spark their imagination by learning about electricity and how to conserve energy. Your grade 5’s will learn all about energy from how it is generated to why we should conserve it. Your grade 6’s will learn more specifically about how electricity works from how it is generated, to types of circuits to the conservation of electricity.

This 5/6 unit includes almost half of the lessons as combined learning opportunities for both grades to complete together.

This is a hands-on unit and is easily differentiated to meet the needs of complex learners. Narrowing the focus to simply understanding sources of energy (5) constructing a simple electrical circuit (6) reduces the complexity of the activities in this unit while also allowing students to participate in activities that are modified at grade level for science. Many of the reading and research materials are available online and can be supported by using digital reading software. Because this unit is student centered and inquiry focused it is easier to differentiate the content and product produced by the students by increasing or decreasing the complexity of level and depth of understanding.
