Making a Move This Staffing Season? A Guide to Deciding and Preparing for Your Next Teaching Interview

April and May have a particular feeling in schools. The staffing emails start circulating. Lists go up in staff rooms. And quietly, in staff kitchens and parking lots, a question starts forming in the back of a lot of teachers' minds: Is this the year I make a move?

If you're weighing a change in your teaching role, or getting ready to put your name in for something new, you're not alone. The staffing process stirs something in almost every educator, whether you've been teaching for two years or twenty.

Maybe you've been in the same grade for a while and you're wondering what else is out there. Maybe the culture at your current school feels heavy, and you're ready for a fresh start. Or maybe you just got the nudge from a colleague to go for that position you've been quietly thinking about for months.

Whatever brought you here, this post is for you. We're covering how to know when a change makes sense, and how to walk into your next teaching interview feeling genuinely ready.

"The staffing process isn't just an administrative exercise. It's an invitation to ask yourself what you actually need from your teaching life right now."

Is It Time to Make a Change?

There's no single right answer here. But there are some honest questions worth sitting with before the staffing window closes.

Ask yourself:

  • Are you comfortable with the grade or subject you've been assigned, or does it feel like a mismatch with your strengths?
  • Is your workload manageable, or do you feel like you're constantly treading water?
  • Do you feel supported by your administration and colleagues?
  • Are you still growing in this role, or does it feel stagnant?

If you found yourself nodding along to the harder side of those questions, that's information worth taking seriously.

The Case for Staying vs. Making a Move

Neither option is wrong. But it helps to get clear on what each one actually offers.

✅ Reasons to Stay

  • Strong relationships with colleagues and admin
  • You've built systems that work
  • The community feels like home
  • Growth opportunities are available where you are

🔄 Reasons to Move

  • You're feeling burnt out or uninspired
  • The environment isn't supportive
  • You want a new grade, subject, or challenge
  • A fresh start could restore your energy

Think of it this way: A change isn't an admission that something went wrong. Sometimes it's simply the next right move for where you are in your career — and in your life.

How to Prepare for Your Teaching Interview

If you've decided to go for it, the next step is making sure you walk into that interview room ready. Here's a practical breakdown of how to prepare.

1
Research the school and its leadership. Look up the school's vision and any signature programs. Find out what the principal values. A quick search on social media can tell you a lot about the culture before you even walk through the door.
2
Know the board's strategic directions. If you're applying to a new school board, read their mission and strategic plan. Understanding their priorities lets you speak their language in your answers.
3
Build your buzzword bank. Familiarise yourself with terminology that matters in education right now: high-yield strategies, differentiated instruction, assessment for learning, social-emotional learning. Weave these naturally into your responses.
4
Gather your classroom stories. Most interviews use behavioural-based questions. Think through specific moments from your teaching experience — times you differentiated, managed a challenge, collaborated with colleagues, or supported a struggling student. Have those stories ready.
5
Practice out loud — not just in your head. Write out your answers and then say them. Record yourself if you can. It feels awkward, but it builds confidence and helps you hear when an answer is too long or too vague.

I remember sitting with this exact decision myself, more than once. There were years I stayed because the roots I'd grown really did matter. And there were seasons where the right move was to walk through a different door entirely.

What I know for certain is that asking the question in the first place means you care about your teaching life. That's worth honouring, whatever you decide.

Whichever path you're on this spring, I hope it leads somewhere that feels right.
