Writing focuses on expository paragraphs and topic sentences, while grammar covers parts of speech, sentence types, conjunctions, and possessive plurals.
Connections and Narrative Plots: Students identify plot elements, characters, and problem and solution in stories. Writing develops structured narratives from planning through revision, with attention to character motivation and conflict. Grammar covers collective nouns, comparative adjectives, clauses, and advanced punctuation.
Main Idea and Report Writing: Students summarise fiction and non-fiction texts while analysing author’s purpose and narrator’s point of view. Writing builds a three-paragraph research report from brainstorming through peer editing. Grammar reinforces punctuation, commas, colons, and quotation marks in dialogue.
Evaluating and Persuasive Writing: Students evaluate fact, opinion, bias, and evidence across complex texts using mentor books as anchors. Writing develops persuasive essays with counterarguments and rhetorical devices, revised for strength. Grammar covers possessive and relative pronouns and verb tense including progressive.
Inferring and Writers Craft: Students analyse how authors build tension, theme, and mood across fiction genres through character decisions and literary devices. Writing develops complex narratives with refined dialogue, foreshadowing, and voice. Grammar covers linking verbs, perfect tense, interjections, and figurative language.
Synthesizing and Procedural Writing: Students analyse mood, tone, and bias while paraphrasing and summarising multi-paragraph texts. Writing develops detailed procedural texts refined for clarity and logical sequencing. Grammar covers modifiers, parallelism, active voice, and advanced sentence variety for effect.
MATH UNITS
How do Things Compare: Students read and write numbers up to 10,000, work with decimals to hundredths, and compare and order fractions with like and unlike denominators. They interpret bar graphs and line plots, and measure using metres, kilograms, and litres. *Financial Literacy content can be used as additional life skills learning
How Much More: Students add and subtract numbers up to 10,000, apply properties like commutative and associative rules, and work with decimals to hundredths. They also practise making change and budgeting with amounts over $100.
Groups and Balance: Students develop multiplication strategies and solve problems with up to 3-digit by 1-digit numbers. They build fluency through practice and are introduced to variables and algebraic thinking by identifying and modelling unknowns in equations.
Pieces and Parts: Students place fractions on number lines, find equivalent fractions, and compare using models. They apply multiplication properties and develop division strategies with remainders to solve word problems. Probability is introduced using real-world examples and simple experiments.
The Space Around Us: Students classify 2D and 3D shapes by their properties, calculate rectangle area using manipulatives, and convert between metric units. They plot and read coordinates on a Cartesian plane and identify and extend geometric and numeric patterns.
What’s the Story: Students collect and display data using bar graphs and infographics, and calculate mean, median, and mode. They solve equations and inequalities, explore payment methods and financial literacy, and build foundational technology skills. *financial literacy and coding content are addional learning opportunities.
